You may have heard us with a slightly different line-up. See our schedule for an explanation of past incarnations.
David Hayes on guitar, mandolin
The band's unique sound is anchored by the driving rhythms of guitarist
and sometimes mandolin player David Hayes. David is a long time folk guitarist,
finger picker, and singer who became addicted to contra dancing several years back
and gradually became enthralled by the music that powers it. While adjusting to
the flat-picking method common to the genre, he injects his own folk-based, syncopated
technique and loves borrowing tunes from other musical traditions to add to the contra
experience. When not playing or dancing, David may be found doing what he is equally
passionate about: gardening or plying his trade by delivering babies in their own homes. (see his day job) hayes@appalachianstorm.com
Kris Wallace on fiddle, mandolin
For most of her life, Kris Wallace was a passionate enthusiast of fiddle music
of various genres and only in a few brief intervals tentatively gave a shot at
playing music. It took countless blah jobs, years of earning an unsatisfying
college degree, and then half a year soul-searching in nature to push Kris to
take her life-long dream of learning an instrument (fiddle in particular) seriously.
After hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2005, she began playing mandolin.
This man Dolin was her first love, being a delight in its own right as well as
preparing her for her true love, the fiddle.
In addition to contra dance music, Kris loves other types of old-time, Celtic, Cajun,
and folk and is most gratified
when learning or writing new tunes. kris@appalachianstorm.com
David White on fiddle, banjo
David White learned to play fiddle and banjo within the traditional music and
dance community of upstate SC and western NC by listening to and playing with many
of the seasoned old-time musicians well known in this area. With rhythm in his bones and
soul-stirring tunes in his head, David plays with an oomph that inspires people to move.
In addition to performing, jamming, and writing tunes, David is also known
for his long-time leadership in Harvest Moon Folk Society, the Moon Dance festival, and FiddleStep, a program of community music and dance. white@appalachianstorm.com
Terrell Jones on bass, percussion
Terrell Jones is an Asheville native who played
electric bass for a rock band called Freefall in the Raleigh area
during the early 80's before spending two and a half years overseas,
mostly in Africa. Moving back to the mountains in the late 90's
rekindled his old time, bluegrass, and celtic roots which then led
him to contra dance and play the stand-up acoustic bass for
Appalachian Storm. He and his wife Sarah are proud first-time parents of Violet Orleen. (see Violet and Terrell hiking) terrell@appalachianstorm.com
